Preliminary Statistical Analysis

A preliminary descriptive statistical analysis on the integrated Story County roadway-crash (fixed-object and cross centerline crashes) records was performed. The analysis was conducted for the selected roadway information (e.g., classification and geometry, speed limit, surface type and width, number of lanes, traffic volume, etc.) and crash characteristics (e.g., drivers' age and gender, severity, vehicle type). This preliminary analysis reveals, for examples, total number of crashes (fixed object or cross centerline) occurred on two-lane versus four-lane roadways as well as total population of male and female drivers involved in any one of these two crash types. The following two figures present the number of fixed object crashes with respect to number of lanes and drivers' genders in the Story County.

Using the statewide data for each of the selected parameters and conducting further statistical analyses, the significant factors in causation of fixed-object and cross centerline crashes will be identified.

Note: The completion of the statistical analyses is dependent upon receiving a new set of data containing statewide crashes from 1987-1998 and the controls for the base record segments at the crash location. Conducting further data manipulations, the new database will provide data for all entering legs at intersections. This database enhancement will enable us to recognize which intersections' legs a crash belongs to. The new database is expected to be received by the end of July 2000.
