About the research
Research objective: The objectives of the research will be to identify technologies for producing warm-mix asphalt and recommend up to 3 that have the greatest potential for success using Iowa aggregates. Commonly used HMA materials and designs consisting of Iowa aggregates will be used in the study. The selected warm-mix asphalt technologies will follow supplier recommendations for usage and will include laboratory mix design methods unless other substantial documentation can be identified with alternative methods. Developed laboratory mixtures will be tested for performance (permanent deformation, fatigue, and moisture susceptibility), aging characteristics, and laboratory compaction effort. A draft set of procedures will be developed for field implementation. Field trials of themost promising technologies will be constructed and monitored and laboratory performance tested. The performance of the field produced mixtures will be compared to laboratory produced mixtures and standard HMA control mixtures.
