Training available on security reporting

Tom McDonald, LTAP safety circuit rider

The eyes and ears of Iowa’s transportation workers can have a direct and positive impact on the safety and security of all Iowans and visitors to the state. Workers are familiar with the way things should look on our roads and streets and can recognize when something out of the ordinary is occurring—some-thing like a potential terrorist act.

“Highway Watch” is a new program to train transportation workers in observing and reporting any suspicious activities on or near the roads where they work. Funded by the Transportation Security Administration and administered by the American Trucking Association, Highway Watch is a volunteer program. Trained and certified volunteers call in unusual incidents, suspicious activity, or unsafe conditions using a special toll-free number.

Members of the CTRE staff have been trained in the Highway Watch program and can offer it to Iowa’s transportation workers in conjunction with other scheduled training or as a stand-alone training module.
