P 1651 A Review of Pedestrian Safety Research in the United States and Abroad: This report provides an overview of research studies on pedestrian safety. It includes details of pedestrian crash characteristics, measures of pedestrian exposure and hazard, and specific roadway features and their effects on pedestrian safety.

P 1652 Scenic Byways: A Design Guide for Roadside Improvements: The purpose of this design guide is to assist planners, designers, and managers of scenic byways. It shows examples of improvements, outlines the planning process, and describes design principles. The guide focuses on scenic byways that cross federal lands but may be applied to any byway.

P 1653 Accessible Sidewalks and Street Crossings: An Informational Guide: This booklet has information on the legal framework for the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. It provides guidance on grades, cross slopes, surfaces, protruding objects, driveway crossings, curb ramps, pedestrian signals and crossings. Video V 725 illustrates these issues.

It provides guidance on grade, cross slopes, surfaces, protruding objects, driveway crossings, curb ramps, pedestrian signals and crossings. Video V 725 illustrates these issues.

P 1655 Roadway Safety Tools for Local Agencies: NCHRP Synthesis 321: This report focuses on identifying safety tools that can be used by local agencies in formulating safety programs. The safety tools are grouped into reactive and proactive and are linked to appendixes that provide detailed information on the specific tool, its application, or reference to additional documentation.

P 1656 Rehabilitation of the Hammond Bridge in Marion County, Iowa: This report documents the history and rehabilitation of the Hammond covered bridge.

P 1658 The Nature of Roadsides and the Tools to Work with It: This booklet covers the Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) approach to roadside development and maintenance. It includes information on invasives, useful IRVM tools, preservation, native plants, management practices, research reviews, and policies.

Videos

V 730 The Iowa River Bridge: Progress Through Preservation: Environmental concerns were foremost in the Iowa DOT’s planning for the U.S. 20 crossing of the Iowa River in Hardin County. This video documents the specific plant, animal, and archeological concerns; project history and development; bridge design; construction process; and lessons learned. Building the steel girder bridge adjacent to the river valley and rolling out span by span over the valley was a very unusual and awe-inspiring endeavor.

V 731 Air in Portland Cement Concrete Pavements: This video describes the use of the air void analyzer to determine entrained air content.

V 733 Poisonous Plant Safety: This video shows how to identify poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. It describes precautions to take when working in areas where these plants may exist and the proper treatment in case of contact.

V 734 Hazmat Leaks, Drips, and Spills Cleanup: This video shows the proper way to deal with cleanup of hazardous material spills that may occur in shop areas and maintenance facilities.

DVDs

CD-ROMs

CR 62 Driver Education Work Zone Awareness Program: This PowerPoint presentation is used in the Illinois driver education program to make new drivers aware of dangers in highway work zones. It includes a student assessment, student certificate, survival tips, and two videos.

CR 63 Rubber Temporary Ramps: This video describes a temporary ramp which can be used at milled butt joints, bridges and end-of-day joints. These have been approved by the Illinois DOT for use at speeds up to 45 mph.

CR 64 The Iowa River Bridge: IRB Report, Photo Library: This CD-ROM contains the report on a study to monitor and evaluate the structural performance of the steel bridge superstructure and launching elements used during the bridge construction as well as documentation of the bridge instrumentation and monitoring process.
