Project Objectives

Collect and review the corridor safety programs from several states, with special emphasis on rural 2-lane highways.

Project Abstract

Several states have developed safety corridor programs. These are programs that have identified corridors with above expected crash frequencies and use a team to identify treatments and strategies to reduce above expected crash frequencies. This project will develop a synthesis of safety corridor programs conducted in the United States and identify the most promising practices and programs to share among the states (focus on Region 7 states).  Emphasis will be on integrating enforcement, education, engineering and other disciplines.

Task Descriptions

  1. Develop interview questions/ guidelines.
  2. Write a synthesis report of the best practices.
  3. Pilot test the Safety Corridors Program in Iowa.

Project Period

March 2007 – July 2008

Potential Benefits of the Project

This particular activity was identified by the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri at the St Joseph Safety Forum in March 2006.
