Mar 08, 2002: MC² Exec. Committee Conference Call

MC2 Executive Committee Telephone Conference Call March 8, 2002

John Volker, (New Chmn greeted with effusive and laudatory remarks). Jim Cable, Jim Groves, Dan De Graaf, Ron Meskis, Jim Parry, Tom Bryan, Secy.

The next meeting is scheduled for April 17-18, 2002 in Chicago. Jim Cable will make contacts to find possible meeting sites near OHare airport. Jim will also contact John Lingscheit at Northwestern University ACBM to see if they have any suggestions. Ron Meskis will make the contacts, finding out who the players are and possible speakers and arrangements for a field trip to the Wacker Drive project in Chicago and advise.

There is a question of the State representatives attendance due to travel restrictions in effect in various states (WI no travel outside the state, IN travel outside the state would permit Chicago meeting location, IA travel availability outside the state up in the air at this time. A possible proposal for use was made involving the use of pooled funds from the states for attendance travel for future meetings. This subject will be pursued further.

An alternative approach to the meetings would involve use of satellite communication downlinks. Possible methods CTRE, FHWA, Internet. This may be necessary for state participation in future meetings. A business meeting will be needed for replacement of the Executive Committee members who will be rotating out of the committee. The theme for the meeting was discussed considering the following candidates:

1. Blended cements what are they, how are they made, characteristics, limitations, and specifications 2. Load transfer devices shape and spacing, materials, performance 3. Pavement rehabilitation methods and materials patching, overlays, dowel bar retrofit 4. MCC pooled fund study status on optimization 5. Ride quality and slab dynamics

In the ride quality category, the subject of lightweight profilers became the core discussion subject. It was decided that Ride Quality would be the theme subject for the meeting.

Discussion:

WI is using the lightweight profiler as an option for the contractor in ASPHALT paving projects. Work has been underway on calibration of these profilers in Texas. There is a desire to know the results/data provided at the California workshop done 6 months ago on the profilers. The subject of the State Reports section of the meeting will be Lightweight Profilers Use and Future Direction. Also, What coordination is underway between the construction divisions in the DOTs and the pavement management sections? How does the California Profilograph relate to the lightweight profilers?

An additional state information transfer of research to be done this construction season by provision of a written report for distribution at the meeting will also be requested of the states. The reports should be in WORD format and sent electronically to Jim Cable before the meeting.
