Problem Statement
The current MDOT protocol for freeze-thaw evaluation of course aggregates is based on the MDOT Series 6 aggregate gradation.

Research Objectives
Determine if there is a correlation between laboratory freeze-thaw characteristics for the standard-size and large-size coarse aggregate gradations. If so, can a transfer function be derived to rate the large size aggregates based on their respective Series 6 freeze-thaw test results.

Research Method
Perform freeze-thaw evaluations on ten sources of quarried, natural gravel and mined rock on large-size coarse aggregates and their respective Series 6 gradations by using both the confined and unconfined freeze-thaw methods.

Product
large-sized coarse aggregate
