Research Method
In the 1999 and 2000 construction season, WisDOT constructed extensive mileage of dowel bar retrofit on undowelled JPCP around the state. This was based upon specifications which had been successfully used by Washington State and others for several years. Early in 2001, progressive freeze-thaw distress of the concrete repair material in the slots was observed in many of the retrofit segments. Cores were taken from numerous retrofit projects with the full variety of repair materials which had been used. Hardened air system parameters are being evaluated, and freeze-thaw testing of the core samples is being performed.
