Research Objectives
Investigating materials-related distress on concrete attributed to physical and chemical agents, addressing freezing and thawing, deicer induced scaling, reactivity between cement alkali compounds and silica or alkali in the aggregates, reactivity between cement and either external or internal sulfates, and corrosion of steel.
Research Method
Phase I has been completed and identifies the types of MRD and protocols for further investigation. Phase II is currently underway, using laboratory analysis of cores to identify actual types of MRD found. Remedial and preventative measures are to be proposed as a result of the investigation.
