Route Surveying Class


Students get plenty of time to practice their skills outside.
Overview
Route surveying is a week-long class that includes a review of math fundamentals applicable to survey, project exercises in horizontal and vertical control, and an introduction in the use of total station survey equipment.
Class participants will receive hands-on experience with calculators, note-keeping, and instruments used in performing route survey field exercises. Field exercises will also be performed with total station equipment. Specific topics include note-keeping procedures, percent grades, horizontal and vertical curves, and slope staking.
This class qualifies for 30 credit hours in the Iowa Roads Scholar program.

Who should attend?
Technicians at the DOT, county and city engineer’s offices, and survey and consulting firms who work at roadway plan development, construction inspection, and materials management would benefit from attending.
Students should have completed the Mathematics Fundamentals class or be proficient in fractions, percent grade, geometry, and working with angle and distance measurements.
Instructor
Joe Telgren
Joe has more than 30 years of extensive and varied surveying experience. He began as a surveyor with the Iowa Highway Commission, has been in business for himself, and is presently survey coordinator with the Iowa Department of Transportation in the Mt. Pleasant residency.
Dates and locations
Please see our workshop/conference calendar for current dates. The class is usually offered once per year. It is held at CTRE in Ames (address below).
Registration and fees
Registration is limited to 20 participants.
Registration fee is $350 and includes class materials, handouts, and engineering problem paper. Make checks payable to Iowa State University.
Students should bring a calculator, engineering scales, triangles and other drafting supplies.
