LTAP's Safety Circuit Rider Program

Tom McDonald, Safety Circuit Rider

Iowa's award-winning Safety Circuit Rider program, part of the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), presents transportation safety-related workshops to local governments and other groups and offers suggestions for improving roadway safety. Many of these programs are given anywhere local agencies have space—in meeting rooms, shops, or garages.

The Circuit Rider also provides programs on work zone safety, MUTCD requirements, retro-reflectivity, roadside safety, excavation safety, pavement markings, and much more.

Safety workshops offered year-round

Two different flagging workshops and a signs and pavement markings workshop are available year-round at local Iowa agencies' request.

Signs and pavement markings

This workshop focuses on MUTCD requirements to help local agencies stay current. Recommendations for good practice techniques are also included.

Professional flagger training

Flagging is an important assignment and should be carried out with authority and a sense of responsibility. The image a flagger projects can affect the public's attitude toward the work activity and the flagger's organization. By providing flagger training, a transportation agency helps enhance employee skills and helps protect from potential liability claims. The agency will also be complying with Part 6 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which strongly recommends adequate training.

If you are interested in providing flagger training for your employees, schedule a three- to four-hour workshop with Tom McDonald. He will come to your city or county to teach flagging.

Tom offers two separate workshops:
