Work Zone Safety Workshops 2007

Temporary Traffic Control for Construction, Maintenance, and Utility Work Zones

About the workshps

Each day-long workshop is divided into a general session for all participants and breakout sessions for specific types of work zone activity: city, county, utility, Iowa DOT construction and contractors, and Iowa DOT maintenance. Presenters for the general session include Jerry L. Graham, president of Graham Consulting; Jerry Roche, safety engineer with FHWA, and officers from the Iowa State Patrol or local police.

Workshop objectives

Who should attend

All workers (and their supervisors) whose duties place them on or near the traveled portion of the roadway should attend. Because the information is valuable for workers at all levels, attendance can be rotated systematically, making it possible for all workers within an agency to attend every few years. Contractors and consultant engineering staff are welcome to participate.

For those interested in Iowa DOT specifications and requirements, the Iowa DOT Construction and Contractors breakout session may be most appropriate. The city breakout session may be best for those interested in urban work zone applications.

Breakout sessions

The breakout sessions are tailored to specific types of work zone operations. The format includes small group problem-solving activities. All breakout sessions are not presented at each workshop. Vendors and suppliers in the road construction industry may register for the same session as those with whom they do business.

County breakout

A teaching team experienced with traffic control on county roads will explain how the MUTCD is applied in situations commonly encountered by county work crews. Secondary roads personnel and others who work on or adjacent to high-speed, low-volume rural roadways are invited to attend.

City breakout

Instructors experienced with traffic control on commercial and urban streets will explain how the MUTCD is applied in situations commonly encountered by city work crews. Examples are taken from lower speed in both high- and low-volume situations. Those invited include city street maintenance crews and their supervisors, personnel from city engineering offices, other city employees involved in public works or risk management, and consultants and contractors in the construction industry who work primarily with cities.

Utility breakout

Utility work can frequently conflict with traffic and put workers in vulnerable
locations. In these situations, the principles of safe traffic control are most important, and the MUTCD is always applicable. Staff from electric, gas, telephone, cable TV, water works crews, and supervisors are invited to attend.
