Notes on application of the Green Book
AASHTO Green Book – what’s
different in the 5th Edition? From the ITE web site, “This fifth edition of
AASHTO's "Green Book" contains the latest design practices in universal use as the standard
for highway geometric design
and has been updated to reflect the latest research on superelevation
and side friction factors as presented in NCHRP Report 439. New exhibits in
Chapter 3 will help designers to quickly and accurately determine the side
friction factor used for horizontal curve design,
the superelevation rates for various curve radii, and
the minimum radii with normal crown for each of the five maximum superelevation rates.”
Design Exceptions – From the Historic Roads
web site, “When working with the Green Book it is important to remember the
flexibility contained in the range of criteria recommended. As noted, this
flexibility is at the discretion of your state or local transportation
department. It should also be noted, under special circumstances, that solutions
outside the recommended range may be sanctioned by the FHWA for projects on the
NHS. This special approval, known as a “design exception,” is based on a
clearly articulated need and demonstration that the proposed solution will not
lead to a safety problem.”
Errata
(applies only to first printing of the 4th edition – I believe the
CD has the first printing. If you have a
second printing, it will be indicated under the 2001 publication date) I suggest if you
have a hardcopy of the first printing, that you make these changes.
