Teaching English and Spanish to construction workers

American construction supervisors are learning basic, work-related Spanish, and Hispanic craft workers are learning basic, work-related English. Thanks to a multi-phase research project sponsored by the Iowa DOT, CM&T staff developed a curriculum and have conducted on-site training to construction workers.

One objective of the research was to improve Hispanic workers' safety on the job. In the construction industry, Hispanics have the highest rate of fatal work injuries among all racial/ethnic groups.
