About the research

Research objective: This project will develop a guidebook that will explain the importance of managing access near major highway intersections. This can primarily be illustrated by using traffic flow data and crash data. The project will also illustrate good practices and poor practices using both hypothetical situations on diagrams and actual Iowa intersections with data-overlaid aerial photos and digital photos. The guidebook will be heavily illustrated and will suggest access treatments such as frontage and backage roads, driveway access and median break spacing, new raised or flush medians, directional access, and alternative access from minor roadways.
